چکیده

Are investigated climate change impacts on glacier melt discharge in the tropical Andes given its relevance to water resources. The means are the investigation of net radiation and potential glacier melt trends. For such purposes is assessed the investigation of the Surface and Energy Balance algorithm (SEBAL) performance, and is carried a practical application to establish the relevance of the net radiation trends investigation. The latter mentioned application assesses the investigation of climate change impacts on the glacier melt discharge in the Zongo glacier (Andes in Bolivia), and the consequences on hydropower generation for the period 2004-2007. Under and adequate SEBAL performance (Root Mean Square Error for albedo estimations are 0.15 in average), the melt from the studied glacier in the period 2004-2007 is estimated to produce a maximum potential energy of 3.1 [MW h] in average per day (dry season). Three out of four contributors to the Zongo hydropower system are constituted by ice massifs, which suggests that a negative impact should be expected on the energy production of the Zongo power plant even under an stagnating net radiation trend scenario.

The Relative Impact of Climate Change on the Extinction Risk of Tree Species in the Montane Tropical Andes

There are widespread concerns that anthropogenic climate change will become a major cause of global biodiversity loss. However, the potential impact of climate change on the extinction risk of species remains poorly understood, particularly in comparison to other current threats. The objective of this research was to examine the relative impact of climate change on extinction risk of upper mont...

Environmental controls on the distribution and diversity of lentic Chironomidae (Insecta: Diptera) across an altitudinal gradient in tropical South America

To predict the response of aquatic ecosystems to future global climate change, data on the ecology and distribution of keystone groups in freshwater ecosystems are needed. In contrast to mid- and high-latitude zones, such data are scarce across tropical South America (Neotropics). We present the distribution and diversity of chironomid species using surface sediments of 59 lakes from the Andes ...

Assessment of potential climate change impacts on drought indicators (Case study: Yazd station, Central Iran)

This research studies the potential impact of climate change on future trend and changes of two well known drought indicators namely RDI and SPI in Yazd meteorological station, in central part of Iran. For this purpose, data of HadCM3 model that were resulted from GCM-runs based on the IPCC-SRES scenarios of A2 and B2 were acquired and analyzed for projection of daily Tmin, Tmax and precipitati...

Modelling potential impacts of climate change on the oak spatial distribution (Case study: Ilam and Lorestan provinces)

Examining the effects of climate change on the oak spatial distribution, as the main species of Zagros forests and its ecological and economic values is of significant importance. Here, we used species distribution models for simulating current climatic suitability of oak and its potential changes in 2050 and 2070. For this purpose, five regression-based and machine learning approaches, four cl...

Current state of glaciers in the tropical Andes: a multi-century perspective on glacier evolution and climate change

The aim of this paper is to provide the community with a comprehensive overview of the studies of glaciers in the tropical Andes conducted in recent decades leading to the current status of the glaciers in the context of climate change. In terms of changes in surface area and length, we show that the glacier retreat in the tropical Andes over the last three decades is unprecedented since the ma...
